‘Flip it’ Bag
with Deborah Ham
Monday, Nov. 23, Oliver Community Hall 9 – 2:30 (set up at 8:30)
Materials:
• 16 strips of fabric - 1.5” x 22” *(see Note)
• 1 meter of fabric ** (Note)
Sewing supplies:
• Sewing machine, machine cord and foot pedal, instruction book
• Extension cord
• Thread to coordinate with fabric choices
• Ruler and cutting mat
• Scissors, stitch ripper, needles, bobbins, and all other sewing accessories.
• Garbage bag, lunch, coffee mug
NOTE:
* The strips are for the front and back of the bag. 16 is the number of strips needed, but this can be 16 different colours; or 8 x 2 strips of each colour; or even 4 x 4 strips of each colour.
You will be sewing 2 strips together to make each little piece so the more colours you have, the more interesting the pattern will be.
** The amount of material required will depend on what size you want to make the bag. The borders at the top and bottom can be smaller or larger; the handles can be longer or wider. I like wide handles which starts from a strip 6” of fabric which makes a 1.5” wide handle while most patterns call for a strip of 4” wide, which makes a 1” wide handle.
Further information will be provided closer to November class.
Bio: Deborah Ham
I have been sewing by hand since my tweens, including clothes for Barbie and Midge. Then I did embroidery (the pillowcase transfers!) and I started to knit in my teens. I learned to sew on a machine in grade 9, and then graduated to my mother’s 1960’s Pfaff, where I proceeded to break a needle on any outfit I sewed! One Christmas she received a case of sewing machine needles in her stocking, and only she and I knew the meaning of that!
I sewed all my children’s clothes when they were in public school, and then I went down the quilt rabbit hole, starting on miniature quilts. My first large quilt was a mystery quilt, and I haven’t looked back since then. I still have a lot of WIPs though.
I am now more interested in bags, (trying to keep ‘safe places’ to a minimum!) and have started playing with cork, vinyl, waterproof and water-resistant canvas.
